ChallengePublic libraries are free and open to all, and they depend on the communities they serve. Giving days like Giving Tuesday show how a shared date can rally donors, but libraries had no day of their own. The Seattle Public Library Foundation saw an opportunity: a national day of giving built for libraries, one that any library or library foundation could use to inspire its staff, volunteers and community.
What we didWe partnered with the Foundation to launch Library Giving Day in 2019. We built, maintain and promote librarygivingday.org and its free toolkit: a playbook, media kit, logos, a customizable poster and sample emails. Each year, we compile the results libraries share so others can learn from what worked.
ResultParticipating libraries have reported $13,157,707 raised from 2019 through 2026. In 2026 alone, 98 libraries raised $2,412,956, nearly 30% above their projected goal. The playbook has been downloaded more than 11,100 times, and more than 600 library organizations have taken part over the years. Because not all of them share results, the full impact is likely much greater.
