[...] While it is a compelling storyline that younger people are giving, especially since — as Vinay says — non-profits have already “optimized fundraising with seniors,” what would be of more interest to me is how long these people will stick around. Organizations’ experience with past disaster relief donors are that the vast majority are new donors and that they have been very difficult to renew. This was certainly the case with the tsunami donors I mentioned in the last post.
The word relationship jumps out to me here, Luke. Gone are the days where membership in the PB world means "we'll send you a guide until WE decide it's time to ask for another annual gift plus the additional gift appeals interspersed."

Community and engagement are the huge challenge for us now. How do we build a 21st century community and facilitate engagement? How do we make membership something meaningful? That's the challenge in front of me.

The short answer is...Are we ready for a membership model again?

The public may be but we're not.

The longer we live, the more important it becomes for stations to speak with a single voice yet so few do it. Good direct mail language should be incorporated into pledge and emarketing copy and vice versa. I'm especially happy to be a part of a team in which on-air pledge drives will be planned in conjunction with everything else.

In today's Post, reader <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/26/AR2009032603467.html?sub=AR" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Rosalind Stark responded to Martin Feldstein's op-ed</a>. She noted that President Obama himself says that the proposed tax regulations "would level the playing field -- allowing higher-income donors to continue to deduct contributions but at the same deductibility level as lower-income givers" and that "donors would continue to support the charities of their choice even with the lowered deductibility benefits."

Stark refers to her own experience as a board member of a small non-profit (<a href="http://splc.org/board.asp" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">a quick Google search</a> reveals that it's the Student Press Law Center, which provides free legal help for J-School students. She was also formerly the Executive Director of the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation) and that she agrees with the President's assessment that "the economic downturn will do more to lower what charities receive than will the percentage change in tax deductibility." Which is, of course, also a concern for non-profits.

She ends her letter by saying "with the president's approach, higher income givers would receive benefits no greater than those that the rest of us might enjoy."

Equal treatment is a lofty goal to be sure, but with all the financial challenges not-for-profits are facing right now, shouldn't we at least try to lower the hurdles they face? Especially those under our control?
