A Proposed New Year’s Resolution – Make Online Fundraising a Priority in 2009

In less than a month, we will all be committing to lose weight, quit smoking or become more organized.  But what about those New Year’s resolutions you could be making in your professional life?  As you start putting your list together, consider the Internet.  Most organizations — and I do mean the vast majority — haven’t even begun to realize their potential in raising money online.

But donors are being trained in the political world and in having supported relief efforts following recent major natural disasters to turn to the web to make donations to nonprofits that are near and dear to them.  As the economy continues to tighten, the web is also a great way to make raising each dollar more efficient.

We’ll have a lot to write on this topic in the coming months, but I wanted to point out an interesting list of the top 5 “online fundraising myths” recently compiled by Thon Morse, president of internet fundraising start up Kimbia.  We got to meet much of Kimbia’s team at the PBS Development Conference earlier this year.  Their new product seems to be a great addition to the arsenal of fundraising tools available to nonprofits.  And the more the merrier, I say.

Thon is optimistic about the future on online fundraising and his Five Myths is worth the quick read:
